Commerce: How to Setup and Map Gift Cards from Online Sales

Many of you sell gift cards online, both physical and digital. Below we will go over how to set up a product in RoasterTools to map the gift cards to so you can successfully import those commerce orders.

Physical gift cards:

  • If you're dealing with different versions (i.e., different denominations), I'd recommend creating an Option Set with the various amounts:
    • $25
    • $50
    • $75
    • $100
    • ...and so on
  • This approach allows you to:
    • Map the gift cards sold on your website
    • Send to your internal cafes, if applicable
    • Keep the "inventory" separate for each denomination

Digital gift cards:

If these are digital gift cards purchased and redeemed on your website, you can take a simpler approach

  • You can create a product with a single variant and map all Shopify variations to that RT variant
  • For example, you could set a base price of $25 in RT for this variant - but the price is not important if you only sell it wholesale

You might be wondering: Why does this work for digital gift cards? Here's the key:

  • When an order is imported, RT overrides our internal price with the external price from Shopify
  • This means the same RT variant could be mapped with an infinite number of electronic values ($25, $50, $75, etc.)
  • RT will reflect those actual prices paid in the imported orders

It's crucial to understand this:

  • Our import process from external platforms (like Shopify) uses the price on the order
  • It then overwrites our internal RT price
  • This allows for flexibility in pricing without needing to create multiple variants in RT
